Witnesses of times past
On the coast, the picturesque villages of Comillas and Santillana del Mar invite you to stroll through bygone times and enjoy good fish, seafood and wine. Then you can let yourself be carried away by the nightlife in Comillas.
In the region there are a number of caves with spectacular prehistoric paintings, e.g. Altamira in Santillana del Mar, Monte Castillo in Puente Viesgo and Pindal near Unquera. Santander, the capital of Cantabria, surprises with a gothic cathedral and other impressive monuments.
A jewel is the Basilica of Santa María la Real de Covadonga in the heart of the Picos de Europa. Also in the mountains you can discover rural villages where time seems to have stood still, such as Bárcena Mayor, which is completely surrounded by forest, or Tresviso, famous for its Picón cheese and llocated at an altitude of 907 m, which until the last century could only be reached on foot.
